The Fort Wright Volunteer Fire Department has only 5 full time employees, including the Chief, with 3 off them working every third day for 24 hours making 1200-1300 calls per year. The full time staff is supplemented each day by one - two part-time employees; however, the few volunteers we have add man power when available.

The area that is now Fort Wright was the site of one of the American Civil War fortifications built for the Defense of Cincinnati. The city, incorporated in 1941, was named for Major General Horatio Gouverneur Wright, a Union Army engineer.
It annexed the neighboring communities of South Hills in 1960 and Lakeview in 1977, in addition Kenton Vale.
